Allergic Reactions On Skin

The most common allergic reactions on the skin nowadays are atopic dermatitis, angioedema, allergic contact dermatitis and urticaria. It is the response of the immune system to different irritants and allergen causing skin disorders, which at times serious cases.

Atopic dermatitis, commonly known as eczema, is a skin irritation manifested by intense itchiness which has the tendency of scratching, resulting to lesions which will cause bacterial or viral infections. This would scale and flake later on. It usually affects the face, elbows, and knees. Emotional and physical stress, allergens, sensitivity to foods, soaps, pets, wool and other agents that came in contact with are the common triggers. In treating this, identifying the antigen is vital.

By angiodema, itching and redness did not take place but the allergy attack the soft tissue like the mouth, genitals and eyelids. In angioedema, you will notice the swelling in the deeper skin layers that sometimes connected with hives. One type of hives is the urticaria which is incredibly itchy and red.

Urticaria or hives is characterized by redness, severe itchiness, and swelling of the skin in different sizes anywhere in the body. It is usually triggered by scratching and pressure on the nerves, thus eradication of triggers is not beneficial on this form of allergy. However, its acute cases are usually associated with viral infections, food, drugs or latex which doesn’t need medical intervention or treatment to be cured. Actually, some people with chronic hives normally experiencing it everyday.

Skin irritations and allergic reactions such as allergic contact dermatitis are triggered when the skin comes in contact with some allergic substance. This reaction starts after a day or two where the skin becomes red, itchy and inflamed. Sometimes, there may also be blisters. The most common cause for this skin irritation is poison ivy; but other plants, cosmetics, medications and metals can also trigger a reaction.

It is possible to treat allergic contact dermatitis by scrubbing the affected area with soap and water after its exposure to the allergen. Sometimes it may be necessary to take some prescribed antihistamine and cortisone medications, depending on the severity of the skin condition.

There are some herbs which are jewel weed and wild pansy that that are effective in treating skin irritations and allergic reactions. One of these is, witch hazel that acts as astringent which can alleviate itchy skin rashes as well as used for treating sunburn. The other one is St. John’s Wort with its astringent properties is effective in treating skin irritations and allergic reactions.

Anti inflammatory, antibacterial, and anti fungal are the properties of Aloe Vera making it a good remedy for minor skin irritations.

Allergies are triggered by different allergens; and one such allergen is the food that you eat. Some people experience allergic reactions to food because of a substance found in the food. Generally, there is more than one allergen in food. Allergic reactions to food are usually mild; but there are some people who may suffer from severe reactions like anaphylaxis. Any part of the body can be affected by symptoms of allergic reactions to food which includes the skin, heart, gastrointestinal and respiratory systems.
