How To Become A Cna

A CNA is a certified nursing assistant. Nursing assistants are crucial to the daily operation and running of a hospital. In order to become a CNA you require the personality trait of compassion. You may determine how the experience is for patients who require care and are unable to do it for themselves. A CNA works under the head nurse to assist patients with their daily living. Some titles which apply to CNAs are home health aides, orderlies, or nurses’ aides.

Some tasks which CNAs are responsible for include bathing, grooming and feeding patients, checking vitals, and assisting head nurses with the medical equipment. Another, not as recognized part of the job, is the need of CNAs to offer both the emotional and social support to patients to give them the best possible experience in their condition.

Becoming a CNA is a great stepping stone for people who aspire to become an RN or registered nurse. Basic needs must be met and the job of the CNA is to assist with these for people who need help and cannot do it themselves. A CNA must give quite a bit to their job and it is not always as rewarding so there is a high demand for good CNAs in the job market.

Training to become a CNA is a very quickly moving process. You must possess a high school diploma or GED and a 6 to 12 week certificate program is completed in a medical facility or community college. In the classroom skills that are focused on include anatomy and physiology, nutrition, infection control, and basic nursing skills. Hands on experience is also a huge part of the program and it is accomplished through clinical trials and activities in a medical facility.

If financial assistance is needed many employers will offer free training as long as you work with them for a pre-determined time period in order to pay back for the training fees. The training should be equivalent in both circumstances but many who have taken longer more extensive classes through a college feel that they are more prepared to take and pass the exam.

Following the completion of the program most states have a CNA exam that must be taken. It is offered through the National Association for Home Care. The test has two parts with one being a written portion and the other is a clinical portion which is often more difficult and nerve racking to pass.  It is also a mandatory requirement that all CNAs must pass both a background check along with a drug test. In order to prepare for the test you should study your notes, handouts, and any other material which you have been given during your training. This will help you ace the written portion of the exam.

While being a CNA may not seem like it the best career choice in your life there is plenty of opportunity for advancement to becoming an RNA with some dedication, hard work, and further training. The best training occurs through on the job experience though.
